Heme biosynthesis pathway. In this video, I have explained the pathway of heme biosynthesis including its enzymes and subcellular sites. Heme synthesis occurs partly in the mitochondria and partly in the cytosol. Initial few reactions of heme synthesis occur in mitochondria. The first reaction is the condensation of succinyl-CoA with the amino acid glycine, activated by pyridoxal phosphate to form a synthesis of delta-Aminolevulinic acid. ALA synthase is the rate-limiting enzyme of heme synthesis.
