This paper explores the nostalgia of the so-called “Emo Revival” of five years ago, and the aspects of the emo pop-punk genre that make it inherently youthful. I focus on Jimmy Eat World’s 2001 breakthrough single, “The Middle,” because the band is simultaneously an exception to the youthfulness outlined above yet created an image/text/vessel to be emulated by its teenage fans—namely, me and my friends. Woven through these themes is the story of one of my best friends, who was struck by a car when we were 21, and though he retained his knowledge of lifelong friends and the music we loved, he is no longer able to form new memories.
