@lawrence71714 years ago I’m 17 now and I’ve bowled straight up the boards forever and it’s worked but I am realizing that I will need to be able to hook the lane to become more versatile on different patterns and in college. This video helped me out a lot. ... 60

@xPandora__4 years ago Another good thing to help playing with straight or hooking it is changing the amount of steps on your approach. doing a 5 step approach over a 4 step will generate more ball speed n power which is good for playing straight but that 4 step will help slow it down for when you need to hook it ... 46

@rickyrick93284 years ago If you're throwing straight and the ball goes to the right, simply move your body over two boards to the right and throw normally. If it goes left, move two boards to the left. 46

@jeffromaine1422 years ago Do you have any tips on how to keep your stance open at the end when you have a shorter backswing? If I start throwing left, I feel myself speeding up to try and get the ball away sooner, but that never works. I'm going to watch your How to Keep a Consistent Line video next, and will see if that helps. Thank you. Great video...again. ...

@erikthorstensen51854 years ago In my form of bowling, candlepin, the lanes a rarely oiled! Lets face it a 2.6 lbs ball isn't going to do much damage! However, hooking the ball is extremely difficult in my game, although it might be necessary on the second, or third ball. Yes we get three rolls per frame. Also in candlepin, the downed pins are not removed after every shot. This can help,or hurt if shooting a spare, or ten box! For example,7-10 splits are converted all the time, because of the deadwood! For a good first ball, speed a accuracy are key! My hardest ball I can roll is 38 mph! You hit the sweet spot, our skinny tall pins fly! But of an inch or so can be a strike,or just punching the 2 or 3 pins out, alone! That's why in candlepin there has never been a perfect 300 game ever! I would love to see a reaction video of pro ten pinners watching our game here in New England! Watch Paul Burger's 500 series from a tv show from 1991 on YouTube! ... 4

@adamkelsey48693 years ago Hi I'm a lefty and bowl mainly straight with a slight angle I've always noticed that if I have my feet and hips pointed towards the 3pin that I naturally throw slightly left and have a little hook I've tried opening up for more of a hook and never had any luck, I've had nothing but trouble when I've tried opening up my approach and i tend to dump the ball so I've stuck with what I know and it helps and this video has helped me a but to understand the difference between stances and proper approaches. ... 1

@hackedplayer94793 years ago I tried your technique. And got it in the guyter 2
  • @
@therayven31473 years ago Ok. Here's how I see it... The optimal angle to get a strike is about, if my memory serves correctly, is about six degrees... But to do that throwing straight is that you would have to throw from the lane next to you about a third of the way across... But then you would have to throw over the gutters and all that so it would be nearly impossible... Plus, when you straight bowl, you risk "dead hitting" the head pin... Meaning you hit the head pin straight on... It increases the chances of leaving "splits", including the dreaded "7-10" split...
With straight bowling, you throw the ball as hard and as fast as you can, causing the pins to react violently and just pray they fall over... With "hook" bowling, it requires more finesse... Less speed and power, and more science and mathematics are involved... But hook bowling would bring better results once you get the feel for it...
Correct me if I'm wrong, but this is coming from studying lots of "bowling science" over the years...

@startrek44864 years ago Hmm can't some how agree with straight technic ( high ball speed , less grab , Less rev ) ? ? I know for a fact this raps the corners leaving the 10 pin with a solid bowling ball being thrown. But if the ball keeps moving right I would be worried shooting straight for spares LOL. Yes adjustment is required for spare shooting we know this. I'm a straight shooter to but I find in need to pivot a little. ...
  • @
@nocturnalmayhem04 years ago sometimes straight is the key especially if the lanes are beyond your skill level 16

@plcreator4832 years ago Also how do people throw the ball while standing on one leg while walking or running up to the lane without falling. Like to be honest that is super dangerous just in my opinion. 1

@thelegendarybroccoli47364 years ago Honestly I need to remember everything I used to do because its been so long since I threw a ball. New York aint the place to be rn
  • @
@sportsfntc4 years ago Interesting at the end - you put "less grab" for both, which is a problem I have whether I'm trying to go straight (A game) or hook it (B-C , ah hell, F game). Opening up on stance is a great reminder. Thanks!
  • @
@leegately35907 months ago Probably best to put your camera pointed down the lane rather than chasing the ball with the camera.

@whatisthis28094 years ago straight can have a lot of potential imo tbh 13

@88Mickyfan4 years ago I've been a straight bowler my whole life, but after getting a fingertip ball back in March, I want to learn how to hook it. I only got the chance to practice one time since my local bowling alley reopened (which was about 2 weeks ago). It was frustrating because it was like I was using it for the first time. No matter how much I tried to change the way I released the ball, it just wouldn't curve. I use a wrist support because I have a weak wrist. My question is: What can I do to get better at hooking the ball? Btw, I have watched every single bowling tips video you guys have made, and they are very helpful. You make great videos that have so much great content. Keep doing what you do. You guys are the best! <3 ... 3

@jacobhanekamp25344 years ago When your technique requires you to stay open....
I'm a righty, but I bowl from the very left and stay open to allow the bowl to go right

@colinstate3 years ago You done even have try to hook the ball when you’re throwing through. Just use your dominant hand and it will spin in a bit

@bobhennig65972 years ago Please explain your tec or pro language. Most folks don't know what your saying. Like your hips open , what does that even mean shoulders open up? 1
  • @
@leo52083 years ago For a straight ball, why not lay the ball down at the extreme corner of the lane and angle it diagonally toward the pocket? Brad laid it down near the center both times, which, of course, results in a less effective angle at the pocket. Wouldn't a maximum diagonal shot also allow you to ignore the different oil patterns? ... 1
