    the party was split up in the astral plane trying to get back together. i ended up trying to create a monster while on break a just chose the first one i saw. @niikokun53263 years ago Hey, tom fans! Glad to see our wily fawkes plumbing the mystical arts of the dm. I propose we help tom out with little stories of our favorite creature a large jail room, with chains and cages hanging from the ceiling, the exits closing on command of the gaoler, and a glyph of magical darkness activating at the start of the encounter. The gaoler is an orthon, a devil bounty hunter with a wicked poisoned blade, invisibility at will and a man-sized crossbow with multiple trick bolts. Being a larger devil, he also explodes on running out of health. While the magical darkness is up, he focuses on taking out the troublesome casters before they can dispel it, using his dagger. If the darkness is put out, or if he can be seen by, say, a warlock with devil' s sight, he' ll switch to his crossbow, spinning the chamber to determine which bolt he fires. ...Expand 1

    @Shalakor3 years ago You say the players are going to name everything, but if there' s going to be a bunch of different refugee groups all competing to colonize the land, oh, the aridwest" area can be the dinosaur region as a point of interest (essentially fantasy australia, or, as a commenter said i guess, dbz fight area, lolz)
    although, those wouldn' t have to be the only terrible lizards, since every environment could be home to at least one ancient dragon of a different type that favors that terrain, as one of the main intelligent presences in the land. Think there' s enough diversity to have a domain for all five chromatic and all five metallic dragons at least, and may need to be confronted or negotiated with eventually as time progresses and they eventually take notice of the colonists. Even the evil ones might be more interested in using the newly arrived humanoids over slaughtering them (as long as the players and their rivals haven' t advanced enough to be a perceivable threat to them) so they wouldn' t have to be saved for high level encounters.
    (edit: the ancient dragons of the lost continent could also be the sole creatures powerful and cunning enough to reliably fly over the stormwall and/or swim through the deadly ocean currents beneath it, so they may be the only native creatures to possess objects or knowledge from the larger world beyond, though likely years out of date in most cases depending on how frequently the given dragon has made such trips.
    (p. S. There' s a sidebar in the monster manual for optional rules to assigning innate spellcasting to dragons, which doesn' t even change their cr since the opportunity cost of casting a spell instead of using a breath weapon or multiattack evens out in direct combat. 5e just left spell lists off of their stat block to " simplify andthem, so that they' d presumably be easier for novice dms to run. But the way they don' t have spells by default kinda ruins the logic of draconic origin sorcerers and such, not to mention makes more work for dms that do want them to have spells, so i really wish they' d have provided default spell lists, even if those were also variant rules, so the dm wouldn' t have to prepare one from scratch if they didn' t want to. People have probably posted homebrew for default 5e dragon spell lists you could look up. Though, my google searches so far have been unsuccessful.
    for the desert, maybe back off the dunes near the river and add some fertile banks along its edges (using the grass brush, probably, but something else might work, too) since otherwise it' d likely just be a mud river getting filled with sand. Mud rivers are a real thing, though.
    yeah, the mass exodus from demon invasion plot leaves more room open for conflict and intrigue as the campaign advances, anyway. A planned expedition wouldn' t make as much sense for a mutiny to break out, either, since everyone would presumably know what they were signing up for up front.
    and, since you showed off that fighter aegis subclass you made, i might as well comment on it (i' m assuming the version in the video is the most current one, since the version linked from your twitter had no revision history and was different) i like it. I really like it. But, i feel like too many of its higher level features are built off its 7th level feature, which is a bit of a problem since guardian stance competes with going the two-weapon fighting route enabled from level 3. Typically, you should try to keep the features gained at level 3 supported by the subclass as a whole, so, while the level 7 on its own isn' t a problem, the fact that two whole other feature levels modify it and it alone means some additional tweaking might be for the best.
    my suggestions would be:
    1. Eliminate improved guardian stance;
    2. Move immaculate guardian stance to level 15, optionally limiting it to one triggered melee attack per turn (which would mean one per attacking enemy, so you don' t just melt some poor fool that misses 4 attacks against you in one multiattack action) but add to it a once per round single shield throw triggered attack on an enemy within 60ft that misses you with an attack;
    3. Include allowing magical shields to count as magical weapons to the level 3 feature, and have that also include applying their magic bonus to ac to attack rolls (but not damage rolls)
    4. Move the best offense to level 18, having it apply to just damage since the attack roll bonus was moved to the base feature;
    5. For the replacement level 10 feature, come up with ways that each shield type could contribute an utility function. Preferably ones that aren' t battle centric, but that might be a bit hard if focusing on the shields themselves, so things like protecting allies and movement options to support certain play styles could be nice as well. Tower shield is either pure defense or pure offense since the item interaction rules make it to where you can only have the shield as a weapon, or only have it as a shield. Regular shields are more flexible, while small shields are agile.
    ideas:
    5a. Once per turn shove attempt as a free action against a target hit with any shield attack. Likely fits regular shield best. Or, could even be added as a general benefit of shield bash at level 3 instead.
    5b. Once during your turn, when you hit a creature with a shield attack, that creature can' t make opportunity attacks against you for the rest of your turn. Target must succeed on a con save [or str save] vs dc 8 + your proficiency + your con [or str, assuming regular or tower shield exclusive, or dex if small shield] mod or be unable to use reactions or bonus actions until the start of your next turn, due to being thrown off-balance.
    5c. Provide half cover to any ally within 5ft of you and/or cause allies to have half cover from any attack from an enemy within 5ft of you. Tower shield. Could work regardless of if donned as shield or wielded as a weapon, or one of the two described functions applies to each way of equipping the tower shield.
    5d. While donning only small shields and no other type of shield or weapon, walking speed increases by 10, and you gain a climbing speed and a swimming speed equal to your walking speed. Since the concept is being exceptionally trained in mobility with use of easy-to-wear bucklers.
    5e. Advantage on saving throws and checks to resist being grappled, restrained, or incapacitated when donning a given shield type (probably regular)
    5f. Advantage on saving throws and checks to resist being forcibly moved, teleported, or banished when donning a given shield type (probably tower)
    5g. Benefits that activate with use of base class features (second wind, action surge, indomitable)
    5h. Extra skillor expertise(s)
    6. Oh, one more thing, add " instead of +2" to the end of the description of small shield stats. Since saying +1 ac by itself could be interpreted as +3 total, which even i thought was the case until you mentioned otherwise in the video, with the logic of it being an extension of playing with the themes of two-weapon fighting or something.
    7. Optionally, try to remove language mentioning main-hand or off-hand, since those concepts technically don' t exist in 5e (though, they are probably helpful for most people seeking to use the homebrew anyway, so trying to match official language perfectly isn' t too important)
    hope at least some of the points i touched on were helpful. I do so love overthinking things like this
