Description of vitamin B5 Vitamin B5, or pantothenic acid, is one of the water-soluble (water-soluble) vitamins. It owes its name to the fact that it is universally widespread (in Greek, "pantothen" means "everywhere"). However, it can only be produced by plants or micro-organisms1. Roles in the body Constituent of coenzyme A, vitamin B5 is involved in the metabolism (storage, mobilization ...) of carbohydrates (sugars), lipids (fats) and amino acids (constituents of proteins). It participates in the synthesis of certain hormones: cortisol, aldosterone, adrenaline... It is essential for tissue growth and thus contributes to the skin healing process and hair growth. It is useful for good intellectual functioning. Dietary sources of vitamin B5 Almost all foods contain vitamin B5, but offal, eggs, poultry, meats and some cheeses are particularly rich in it. Many breakfast cereals are fortified with B group vitamins, including B5. Brewer's yeast and wheat germ can supplement intakes. In addition, some micro-organisms in our intestines produce vitamin B5, but this intake is not always significant.
