The impact of chronic stress on the brain and how to manage stress. A little bit of a different format this week, I have been delivering a lot of wellness seminars for companies investing in staff health and the stress section is always a popular segment so I thought I'd do a mini stress workshop for this channel as part of the current brain optimisation series, I hope you enjoy. Stress, fear, anxiety have a profound impact on our brains, chronic, long term stress can actually change the structure of our brains! 💫The frontal lobes (part of the cerebral cortex) is where we make our logical, rational decisions that drive our behaviour. 💫 When we are stressed, the amygdala starts to take over our behaviour (mild stress our frontal lobes can overpower these signals) but chronic or intense stress leads to us being directed by our amygdala. 💫Why is this important? Because this part of our brain interperets stress as danger and can disable the frontal lobes. This in turn can lead to emotional behaviour or poor judgement in response to the fight or flight response kicked off by the amygdala. Have you ever been stressed and acted so emotionally you cringed a bit later? Or said something you didn't really mean?... 💫So what do we do about it? 💫Work on building our emotional intelligence to consciously and mindfully try to manage our emotions in times of high stress. 💫Practice self care routines that lower stress (my favourite is journaling!!) 💫Build healthy habits that design your environment for a lower stress lifestyle. don't forget you can join my new channel @wellness with Lucy for weight management, nutrition and lifestyle #stressrelief #brainhealth #brainplasticity #neuroplasticity #newneuralpathways #managestress
