What are “beliefs”? Beliefs are the things we believe are true. Our behaviour and outcomes often align with our beliefs. Some examples of beliefs when it comes to pursuing a postgraduate degree are: Successful people think they are better than others, I don’t want to be like that, or I am just not the type of person who can get up early to meet a deadline, so I’ll never be able to do a masters, or only selfish mothers do PhDs because you are investing time in yourself and not your kids. You can change your beliefs to serve your goals through careful reflection. Write down your beliefs about success, achieving your goals, earning money, relationships or whatever else is on your mind. Reflect on each of your beliefs, one by one. Do they make sense? Are they reasonable? Are they true? Then go on and formulate new beliefs that serve you better. Repeat this belief several times a day so that it becomes a part of you. Here is an example of an old belief, the reflection and the newly formulated belief: Old belief: Successful people think they are better than others, I don’t want to be like that Reflection: …but I also know of many successful people who are humble and role models to others New belief: I want to be successful so that I can use my success to impact the lives of others Apply this technique in your own context and enjoy the results.
