A painted turtle layed eggs in my yard. Over the years I have had a fasanation with painted turtles and was lucky enough to see the hatchlings emerge from the ground. There have always been huge snapping turtles behind my house. I just found a huge female painted turtle on the side of the road by my mail box. Half of her shell was crushed and insides out.
