Uncle Paulie is back down on the water for this 5th episode, feeding a horde of black flies. The Bowline, a widely known, secure end loop is showcased, using it to secure a ‘painter’ rope to his tripper. Uncle Paulie chooses to connect the opposite end to the shoreline using a Highwayman’s Hitch, made infamous by criminals from a different era, who used it to make hasty getaways on horseback. Here, especially where paddling solo, the Highwayman’s Hitch’s merits are illustrated when securing onto a log protruding from the bank... Just for good measure Paulie has a Daisy Chain occupying the central portion of his painter with sufficient slack at both ends to keep it serviceable. Uncle Paulie demonstrates a couple of ways to disconnect the Highwayman’s one with hands and one without... Also in this episode you just might pick up a few padding pointers, as Paulie models some paddling prowess, to get into position. Caution: the Highwayman’s Hitch is not the best choice for securing a boat that is ‘Knot’ under supervision, due to the ease at which it can be detached! Enjoy Episode 5...
