داء الملوك هو التهاب يصيب المفاصل فيبدأ بورم عادي، ثمّ تتطور الحالة إلى احمرار المنطقة وألم شديد يعيق الحركة، ويعد المشط السلامي في إصبع القدم الكبيرة أكثر المناطق عرضة للاصابة، فيما يعتبر ارتفاع نسبة حمض اليوريك أسيد في الدم بين 6.5–7 أو أكثر السبب الأول وراء المرض، وهذا المرض ناتج عن الإسراف في تناول اللحوم، والدواجن، والأسماك، والكبد، والكلاوي الغنية بمادة البيورين، مقابل انعدام الحركة وقلة النشاط البدني، ومن هنا جاءت تسميته بداء الملوك، فهو غالباً ما يصيب الملوك والأغنياء بسبب نمط حياتهم المترف، فلديهم من الأطعمة ما لذ وطاب، ومن الخدم والحشم ووسائل النقل ما يغنيهم الحركة تماماً.
